Listen to a conversation between Kathleen Finck and Sandie Palomo-Gonzalez as they discuss the newest initiative of the San Antonio Area Foundation. Nonprofit agencies are on the front lines providing for the needs of the members of our community. A healthy, vibrant nonprofit sector is critical to the health and vitality of our community. For this reason, the Area Foundation awards grants that build the organizational capacity of nonprofit agencies and help them better fulfill their missions and serve their clients. Through the Strengthening Nonprofits initiative, the San Antonio Area Foundation will make grants to strengthen nonprofit organizations in Bexar County and surrounding counties. These grants support a number of activities that strengthen and improve organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

The San Antonio Area Foundation recently completed a comprehensive strategic planning process related to our competitive grantmaking. We engaged FSG Social Impact Advisors, a consulting firm that works with community foundations and other funders across the country. Our goal was to examine our grantmaking to determine how to maximize our impact in the community.

As with any nonprofit, the San Antonio Area Foundation couldn't function without its volunteers. Their generous gifts of time and talent allow us to know our community in great depth, make informed decisions about our grants, and steer our organization toward a bright future.
For this month's podcast, I had the pleasure to talk with one of our valued volunteers, Luis de la Garza. De la Garza agreed to serve as the first chair of the South Texas Hispanic Fund Steering Committee at its inception in 2007 and continues to give his time and talents to that effort.

Through the Center for Nonprofit Support, the Area Foundation provides training programs for nonprofit organizations serving returning veterans and their families.
The training programs will build the long-term viability of nonprofits, help them continue to thrive, and address the increasingly important needs of returning veterans. The program will provide training in strategic planning, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and management, and cultural competency, at no charge through the Center for Nonprofit Support.

The Women in Communications Ajay Castro Scholarship for Re-Entering Women provides a unique scholarship opportunity. This scholarship is awarded annually to women, who have been out of school for five years, and are pursuing a communications related degree.
Sylvia Hernandez received this scholarship in 2009. Listen to her story.

With help from the expert staff at the San Antonio Area Foundation, Reedy found the right giving option to fit his needs — a donor-advised fund. “Charitable giving through the San Antonio Area Foundation allows people, like me, to easily and effectively accomplish our objective of helping through our gifts, says Reedy. “A donor-advised fund is a very personal and flexible type of fund.”
